When I was 20, I drove into the mountains to stay for a while. On my way, I stopped off just outside of Hinton, finding an isolated place to sleep and fish. I just finished setting up camp when a strange sound started to spread through the shallow valley, getting louder and more confused by the moment. I walked out to shore and from around a bend came what seemed like hundreds of black ravens silhoutted against the glowing sky, screaming their crackling urgent song. It went on forever and like a cloud they passed by, rushing downriver. I always wondered what they were singing, and I wanted to take flight and find the mysterious end to their sunset journey.

This is absolutely amazing. May I ask you a question?
I'm a Blackfeet woman from the Southern Pikuni Blackfeet of Montana. When I first saw this painting, I fell in love with it, and I've been dreaming about the image and thinking it over, and think that I may want to use it as my very first tattoo- A symbol of my personal growth, inner strength, and taking pride in my Indigenous heritage and my community. But I don't want to use it in that way without permission from the original creator and without knowing if you would be okay with it being used in that fashion. I don't want to appropriate or steal. Could you let me know what your thoughts are on this? Thanks!

Even though silhouettes are so 2-D, the subtle change in density in the trees and the change of scale in the birds creates a nice illusion of depth. And your words create just enough narration to complete the viewing experience. I'm glad you share your art and your thoughts with the rest of us.
